How We Measure

CSI = Statistics Canada, Canada 2006 = 100. We do not invent a second composite.
Map counts = crime incidents in the selected window, dated by when they occurred (not when reported).
Crimes only — police calls that are not crimes (calls for service such as 911 hang-ups and alarms, bylaw and provincial matters, collisions, roadside tests) are left out of every count and the map. Criminal Code driving offences (impaired, dangerous driving, hit and run) are kept.
Latest 24h = each city’s most recent reporting day within the last week. Police often keep adding reports for recent days, so the latest day’s counts can still rise.
Rankings — # = raw counts; 100K = count / population × 100,000 from the published population. Category rankings include only cities whose data covers every month of the period.
Year-over-year compares two complete calendar years (data in all 12 months of both).
⚠ = frozen feed (stale). CSI can still be valid.
Partial portals omit categories — missing is not zero.
