All incidents come from publicly available open-data portals maintained by Canadian police services and municipalities — ArcGIS FeatureServers, CKAN datastores, police dashboard APIs, LexisNexis CommunityCrimeMap, and RCMP open data. No data is purchased, manually entered, or fabricated. When a source stops publishing, coverage for that city freezes at the last successful pull.
The RCMP K-Division public point layer is published without municipal names. CrimeMaps attributes each point to a Statistics Canada Census Subdivision (2021 boundaries: Alberta, plus Saskatchewan border points and Northwest Territories / Yukon / Nunavut where the layer places incidents) for mapping and selected place pages. Detachment areas are not identical to CSD boundaries; edge error is expected. The open layer is property-focused (break and enter, theft, mischief, auto theft, theft from vehicle) and is not a full UCR/CSI taxonomy — do not treat these city pages as complete violent-crime coverage.
Open-data sources are retrieved on a regular schedule, normalised into a shared schema, and published as map tiles plus pre-computed city statistics. Ranking pages show the official Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index (CSI) alongside per-category open-data rates (annualized per 1,000 residents). Full methodology is on the methodology page.
CrimeMaps.ca is not a real-time alerting service, does not cover every Canadian jurisdiction (only those that publish open data), and does not replace official police statistics. Locations are approximated to protect privacy. Always consult the original source for legal or safety-critical decisions.
